Culture Crossing’s Weekly Feature Interview Back

Cat Greenleaf NBC Today's features reporter, shares with us her enlightening experiences with gender issues in India.

Name: Cat Greenleaf
Nationality: American
Profession: TV reporter
Passion(s): People, places, and stories.

Name a country where you’ve experienced cultural differences: India

Describe one of those experiences: In India, I was surprised to see how traditional my 20-something male friends were. They would be embarrassed if I picked up a check, or wanted to drive, or chose to meet them at a spot instead of being picked up. Granted, this was fifteen years ago, but even then, it struck me as very conventional.

What did you learn about your own culture from that experience? Well, the obvious reaction is that I learned how liberated women in the West are. But I don't totally think that?s true. Of course, there are clear differences between the perceptions and treatment of women in the East and West, but I'm not convinced that men and women are treated equally anywhere. It's complicated, though, so?I guess the experience in India got me thinking, if nothing else!

If you were going to adopt a custom, gesture, or trait from another culture,
what would it be?
Hmmm? Great question. I like how, in Islamic countries, people take time out to pray together. I'd enjoy that prescribed pause in the day to remember what?s important.

Where would you like your next culture crossing adventure to take you? I'd really like to get to Africa ? I have so many questions, and there?s so much to explore.
