At both the university and the high school level, the first week of school is a party/getting-to-know-you week. There are lots of drinking games and parties during this week. There are people who choose not to drink alcohol, but they might be seen as a bit of a wet blanket once amongst everyone else who in drunk.

Most students take a year or two between high school and university to travel. Therefore, university students will usually be a bit older than their counterparts in other countries.
