As far as dating goes, Gambians don’t really go out on dates. They tend to hang out in their compounds with friends, so if 2 people are dating one of them will go to the other's place to visit. Usually they go with a friend, not alone. This is more the case is rural areas vs. urban ones.

Dating is done mostly by the youth. In the rural areas, from the age of fifteen and up, girls are expected to get married. In the city, women are single and date up into their twenties.

Gambian men to be very forward. A man may tell a woman he’s just met that he loves her.

Women usually play hard to get at first, so as not get a reputation.

In many areas, the men are supposed to court the women for two to three weeks, declaring their love and sending overly sappy and poetic love texts. This verbose and flowering love vernacular is used always when expressing feelings about the opposite sex.

Greetings are extremely important. To get anything done, you should greet people first. You can’t just walk into a room without greeting everyone, at least in a general way.
