Socializing

Students socialize by going out to meals with friends or out to the movies. Partying is not as common.
Drinking is acceptable by some Ethiopians, but not members of the Protestant Church. Some Muslims and Ethiopian Orthodox believers will drink, but not much and rarely to excess.
Drinking and smoking are generally not acceptable in public, although drinking at family gatherings and holidays is quite common.
Dating is usually seen as a prelude to marriage, so casual dating in the western sense is not very common.
Foreign women dating Ethiopian men should make their intentions clear from the beginning to avoid confusion and potential unwanted behavior after they attempt to end a casual relationship.
Men tend to be aggressive with foreign women, but not as much with Ethiopian women.
Women should be wary of accepting a man's invitation to his home on a date; because this usually communicates that the woman is willing to sleep with the man.
