The university school year begins in September and ends in June.
Summer vacations are July and August.
Winter vacations depend on a University. They can be only for New Year and Russian Christmas days (1-7 January). Or for the whole January.
Ukrainian students usually dress in casual style – jeans, t-shirts, sweaters. The exception is in military, police, government service universities where students wear special uniforms.
When there are important exams or solemn events, men should wear formal suits, women – standard business outfit.
It is unacceptable to wear shorts, short skirts, flip-flops, very revealing clothes. But this is often ignored when the weather is extremely hot.
Most universities use the 5 point grading system where 5 - “excellent”, 4 - “good”, 3 - “sufficient”, 2 - “insufficient”, 1 is “bad”
The most common form of teaching are multiple lectures combined with several workshops.
The education system in Ukraine is based on Soviet traditions and is something hard to deal with.
The main focus is on lectures, homework, home reading and out-of-school practice.
The examination is often held in form of a personal interview or written work checked by a teacher, not in form of some automatic tests.
- Grading system in schools and some universities is usually from 1 to 12. A lot of universities have excepted the Bologna system and give credits for the course.
