Students socialize by going to Church events, sports (during the season), and spending time with family. There are bars and nightlife but if any student from a church school is seen out at night, they could be expelled.

It is not polite to be too drunk, but in the bars downtown you will most definitely see many Tongan youths excessively drunk.

Drinking hard alcohol is not accepted by many church-going elders. However, Tongan kava is widely accepted for males, and they often drink kava almost every night until the wee hours.

Tongans don't usually go on traditional “dates” like in or
Europe . Usually a boy will court a girl, and that starts with going to ask permission from the girl’s family, and it usually ends in marriage.

Many couples will go out without permission and keep it secret. There is also lots of mobile phone texting and calling that young people do as a form of “dating”.
