Communication Style

People tend to be overly polite and rarely say what they mean or mean what they say. Being right is less important than following protocol.
Information is often guarded jealously and only shared on a piecemeal basis.
Often, people will tell you what they think you want to hear or will make something up in order to disappoint you by saying “no” or “I don’t know.”
Swazis tend to be very indirect when communicating. This is common in both rural and urban areas.
A few notes for women: it is very common for other women to make comments about your body figure. Older women will say you look “fat” but it is meant as a comment; it means you are looking well-taken care of and healthy.
