How students socialize depends on where the school is located. Most students socialize at a local pub or in their dorm rooms. The “disco” is not a popular place to go. More popular would be a “club” where a particular kind of music is played.

Universities do little to foster outside socialization. There is generally not a “college campus” feel at Slovak universities and a sense of school spirit is completely lacking. University sporting events are not well advertised.

Drinking alcohol (and in the east of , drinking hard alcohol) is a strong part of Slovak culture. Smoking is common as well.

Though it is not polite to be drunk in public, it’s not uncommon, especially on weekends, to see young people, particularly men, who are drunk. The reaction of most is to shrug it off.

When it comes to dating, Slovak men are generally respectful toward women and not very forward. There are no specific rules as to who should be asking who out.

Maintaining eye contact is important and may be a sign of interest.

Going to a movie is a good first date. Going anywhere where there are large groups of people is good for a first date.

It's a good idea to make an effort to make Slovak friends. This could be easier said than done, but friendships are important for learning about an adopted culture.

Slovaks are generally quiet and shy. A foreigner may have to make the first step to meet people.
