About half of the population lives in the mountainous regions, which remain quite underdeveloped. There are two ethno-linguistic groups, the larger of which speaks Quechua, while the smaller group speaks Aymara. East of the Andes is the jungle region, which is home to about 5% of the Peruvian population. The rest of the population is concentrated along the Pacific coastal region.
