At the marketplace, bargaining is always appropriate, and it does take patience. When you’re a foreigner, they almost always start at an outrageous price, and you should act shocked so they know that you know they’re being ridiculous.

If they won’t lower their price sufficiently, walk away and they will call you back and lower the price. If they let you walk away, it’s generally because they were being honest about a reasonable price.
